10 Great Tips On How To Master Still Life & Location Product Photography

Still life and product lifestyle photography on location offers a unique and dynamic opportunity to capture captivating images in real-life settings. Mastering this genre requires a combination of technical skills, creativity, and adaptability. In this blog post, we will share some great tips to help you excel in still life and product lifestyle photography when working away from the comforts of the studio.

Let's dive in and discover how to create compelling images that tell stories and evoke emotions.

1. Plan and Scout the Location:

Before heading out to shoot, thoroughly research and scout the location, ideal multiple locations to give you and the client options to choose from. You will want to visit the location and think about how the location will work with the narrative and the shots you plan to create. Understand the lighting conditions, available props, and potential backdrops is also important, if you're lucky enough to have a great team then you will be able to discuss options and ideas with the art director and stylist. Preparation will help you visualise the final images and plan your compositions accordingly.

2. Consider the Natural Light:

It’s great to be able to Utilize natural light as much as possible. It adds a soft and organic feel to your images. Take note of how the light changes throughout the day and plan your shots accordingly to capture the best possible lighting conditions. In some cases you will also need to use artificial light so consider how and where these will be placed in order to correctly balance with any natural available light.

3. Bring Essential Gear:

Your stylist and production team will have props products and styling items prepared so as the photographer your main objective will be to Pack your location kit. If your like me you will prefer to have more than what you need  Cameras including backups, Lenses, tripod, reflectors, and any other necessary equipment. Consider portable lighting options such as  portable strobes if additional lighting is needed.

4. Consider props:

It’s good rule to keep your composition clean and uncluttered and by removing any distracting elements that do not contribute to the story will help convey and improve the overall shot. Focus on the main subject while considering the surrounding environment. Slow down and take you time to consider each prop and item in the scene. Only use props that enhance the narrative and complement the main subject. Props can add depth, context, and visual interest to your images. Experiment with different arrangements and compositions to find the most appealing setup.

5. Embrace the Environment:

Capture the essence of the location by incorporating elements of the surroundings into your compositions. This helps create a sense of place and adds authenticity to your images. After all you have chosen the location for a reason so make sure you maximise your surroundings

6. Pay Attention to Details:

In still life and lifestyle photography, details matter. Be mindful of small elements like textures, patterns, and colours. They can elevate the overall aesthetics of your images and create a visual impact. If you have a team of art directors and or stylist then some of this will be conisdered already however its important to discuss and collaborate with your team to really focus on the important elements of the shoot.

7. Experiment with Angles and Perspectives:

Don't limit yourself to shooting from eye level. Explore different angles and perspectives to add variety and visual interest to your images. Consider shooting from above, below, or from unique vantage points to capture intriguing compositions. You will have plan in mind but don’t be afraid to capture candid moments and adapt as you see new ideas. When shooting models in lifestyle settings, candid moments often tell the most authentic and compelling stories. Encourage your subjects to engage in natural activities or emotions, capturing genuine expressions and gestures.

8. Create a Story:

Tell a narrative through your images. Sometimes the product or setup might not tell much of a story so use you location models and props. Consider the emotions, interactions, and relationships within the scene. A well-constructed story engages viewers and keeps them connected to your photographs.

9. Post-Processing Enhancements:

Use post-processing techniques to refine your images. Adjust colors, contrast, and exposure to enhance the mood and bring out the desired elements. However, remember to maintain a natural look and avoid over-processing.

10. Be Flexible and Adapt:

Photographing on location can present unexpected challenges. Stay flexible and adapt to changing conditions. Embrace unexpected opportunities and let them guide your creativity. Flexibility and adaptability are key to achieving outstanding results.

Conclusion:

Mastering still life and product focused lifestyle photography on location requires a blend of technical expertise, creativity, and adaptability. By planning ahead, utilizing natural light, incorporating props thoughtfully, and focusing on storytelling, you can create captivating and emotive images that leave a lasting impression. Embrace the process, experiment with different techniques, and allow your unique perspective to shine through. Happy shooting!

Product Packshot and Lifestyle Photography

It’s been a challenging time for most of us recently but there does appear to be light at the end of the tunnel. This week, non essential shops have started to reopen and Howlett Photography studios are to follow suit inviting our clients back to the London studio from mid-July.  In the interim, we will continue to operate with our remote approval processes which has received positive feedback from our clients.

The images in today’s blog were completed in April at the peak of virus, with almost everything being shut down and most jobs cancelled. This particular job was of super importance for my client and postponing or cancelling was not an option

The brief was to create a series of lifestyle and still life photographs with the main product surrounded by creatively styled and cleverly arranged props. The major problem was that most shops had closed leaving little opportunity to source relevant props, oh and one more crucial element was required: a model!

A well stocked studio proved vital in creating the different backgrounds and themes; using a mix of leftover wallpapers, paints and other materials, I was able to create a great mix of options. The next hurdle would be sourcing all the props. With most retailers shut I had to use items that could be found around the house to create around 20 unique setups.

Finally the model. A requirement was for a female model to feature in a few shots either holding or interacting with product. With a bit of convincing the "missus" stepped in!  Anyone who shoots commercial product photography will know that hand modelling is not as easy as it sounds and although a little tricky at times I think the final shots looked great including the wonderful model!

An important part of being a successful commercial photographer is the ability to problem solve and this latest product lifestyle shoot was no different. Food Photography Luxury Hampers

London Food Photography

Ramadan is underway and I thought it would be a great time to showcase some product photography recently shot for Islamic gifting company, Muburak London. The still life photography, setbuild, styling and production was all completed in-house - literally in this case - as it was shot in my home studio in South London under isolation.

The entire process was completed under the lock down which meant sourcing materials was tricky; fortunately, i managed to source suitable paint and wallpaper online, and made the backgrounds a few days before the shoot. Each food and gift hamper collection has a theme with the main features centred around food and the celebration of the Islamic faith.

When arranging a large number of products, it’s important to know exactly which products are in each collection and how they are to be styled for the finished image. Normally I would have hands-on assistance to organise and style the items. However, with social distancing in full effect, it is simply impossible to work with a stylist or client directly, although, I do get some help from my studio dog! (picture on the right). Instead, a simple remote approval process has been introduced, and I’m also undertaking all styling and production.

I am lucky to have a home photography studio and can still work. My thoughts go out to all freelancers and anyone in the creative industries who are struggling at this time. And of course, massive amounts of gratitude to to all our frontline services and everyone making a sacrifice.

Creative Cosmetics - Still life & Lifestyle Photography

Cosmetic Product Photography

It’s a difficult time for most of us now that we have all been asked to stay indoors and adhere to social distancing. Our first thoughts and concerns go to any individuals and businesses adversely affected by the outbreak of Covid-19. Whilst some businesses are struggling others can adapt, with some new creative ways of communicating and remote working we continue to provide photography and creative content whilst keeping everybody safe and well.

Like most creative industries, Howlett Photography have felt a massive downturn in business as clients cancel or put jobs on pause whilst we all try to weather the storm. However, some online companies still require still life and product photography and with new processes, including live video feed and email confirmation, we’re still providing awesome product photography and creative still life.

Advertising Product & Packshot Photography

I photograph lots of different product types from cosmetics, food drink and liquids , luxury jewellery items and fashion accessories. In this article we focus on a shoot for a new brand to the UK selling electrical products. For this shoot i was asked to create a series of creative lifestyle product shots for a baby monitor and camera showing the product in different lifestyle setups.

lifestyle product photography. Baby monitor and camera surrounded by lifestyle baby products on soft blanket. Created in London still life studio by chris howlett

Its not always easy to associate a story with a product, in the case of a baby monitor it seamed obvious what props and backgrounds would work. With a selection of cuddly toys and bright colours teamed with soft textures and good lighting created the right theme and mood for the creative still life shots.

As the product was a prototype additional retouch would be completed by the client including dropping in the screen and illuminating the power button. The final images were used across lots of different platforms with additional text and copy so my photography is very much the base image for the client to use.

If you have a new product ready to launch to the market or perhaps you need advertising photography to help promote an existing product line, whatever you photographic requirements Howlett Photography would like to help; get in contact to discuss you ideas and lets create some eye catching photography

Creative Still life Fashion Products - Styling with Thread

The crucial role of the Stylist can sometimes seem underrated when compared to the ‘lead’ status of the Photographer, but it should never be taken for granted. Even when using the best equipment, it takes the keen eye and creative talent of a stylist to bring all of the visual elements of a shot together.

On a recent 3-day shoot for fashion brand Thread I had the pleasure of working with a fantastic team of stylists following strong art direction - a collaboration which proved to be a great success.

The dynamic strong lighting, and considered textured backgrounds add interest to these fashion accessories, giving these creative advertising style shots personality and flair.

Styling isn’t just about how objects look in themselves. When shooting a set of products, it’s also about their visual appeal when grouped with other similarly unique and interesting objects. The space around and between objects is also a factor, and how it is used is essentially a fundamental element of contemporary styling. So, props and accessories - like kraft gift boxes and hessian ties - are strategically positioned, creating imagery that is crisp and detailed.

These kinds of shots are great for gifs - whimsically styled moving images shot against textured, painted colourama are visually impactive - perfect for social media and web advertising.

Still Life Cosmetics - Bottling the Coast

The UK is home to some of the richest and diverse coastlines in the world and I was thrilled to be commissioned by Haven Holidays to complete four creative still life setups for a series of fragrances, based around four of their coastal holiday resorts in the UK.

Each fragrances or room diffusor is based on a different Haven resort, located next to a beach or iconic coastline in Norfolk, Cornwall, Wales and Scotland. Each set was created incorporating inspiration from each of these regions making each set both complementary and unique.
