Real Food Product Photography Beats AI: Why Leading Brands Still Choose the Camera
When AI image generators first exploded onto the scene, many predicted the end of commercial product photography. Yet, after experimenting with AI-generated imagery, many brands are rediscovering the value of real creative still life photography. Here's why.
The conversation around AI has become impossible to ignore. Every week there seems to be another tool promising to replace photographers with a few lines of text.
The reality I've experienced has been very different.
Having worked with Bulk on a range of food and drink photography for there nutrition and product campaigns, I've seen first-hand why premium brands continue to invest in professionally crafted photography. AI is an impressive creative tool and can certainly have a place in concept development or early visual exploration, (I certainly received lots of creative brief’s in AI) but when it comes to creating polished campaign imagery that accurately represents a product, there's still no substitute for capturing the real thing.
The images below were photographed entirely in-camera using carefully crafted lighting, food styling and practical effects—not created with AI or built from dozens of composite layers.
Creating Images That Feel Real
One of the biggest compliments I receive from clients is that the finished photographs feel authentic.
That isn't an accident.
My approach is to build as much of the final image as possible on set. Rather than relying heavily on CGI or extensive compositing, I prefer solving creative challenges during the shoot itself.
Whether it's the texture of peanut butter slowly falling from a spoon, golden syrup pouring naturally over pancakes or sculpting dramatic lighting around a product pack, these details are created in front of the camera.
Those tiny imperfections—the way light wraps around glossy packaging, the movement of liquid, the texture of food—are often exactly what makes an image believable.
When viewers can't quite explain why an image looks good, it's usually because their brain recognises that it's real.
Collaboration Can't Be Prompted
Commercial photography isn't simply pressing the shutter.
Some of the strongest ideas happen during the shoot.
An art director may decide that the lighting needs to become moodier. A food stylist might adjust the arrangement of ingredients. Marketing teams often request small changes to better highlight a product benefit or strengthen the composition.
Those creative conversations happen in real time.
Working together on set means ideas evolve naturally. Lighting can be refined, props moved by millimetres and compositions adjusted until everyone is confident they've created the strongest possible image.
That collaborative process is incredibly difficult to replicate using AI-generated imagery.

One of the advantages of working this way is transparency.
Alongside these final images, I also captured behind-the-scenes footage showing exactly how the photographs were created.
Clients increasingly enjoy sharing this content across their own social channels because it demonstrates the craftsmanship behind the campaign. It shows that the lighting, food styling, pours and textures are happening live on set rather than being generated inside a computer.

AI Is a Tool—Not a Replacement
I use AI myself.
It's excellent for brainstorming, developing mood boards, refining ideas and helping communicate creative concepts before a shoot begins.
But when a brand wants imagery that genuinely reflects its products, allows creative collaboration throughout the day and stands up to close inspection across advertising, packaging and digital campaigns, professional photography still delivers something AI struggles to match.
