Product Photography on Location – Hoover Lifestyle Shoot

I’ve recently moved into a new studio, but more on that soon. This post focuses on shooting on location and how it fits within product photography and still life photography.

While many projects are created in a controlled studio environment, some briefs call for a more lifestyle-driven approach. In these cases, combining still life photography with real environments helps create images that feel more natural and relatable. This is where location houses become particularly useful.

For shoots requiring multiple setups, a location house allows for a wide range of scenes while maintaining consistency—something that’s essential in commercial product photography.

The Brief

This project involved producing a series of lifestyle product photography images for renowned home appliance brand Hoover. The aim was to create a set of visuals that showcased different products across a variety of real-life environments within the home. The shoot took place over five days, using a single location house to capture multiple rooms and scenarios. This approach allowed for a broad range of imagery while keeping a consistent visual style across the campaign.

From kitchens and living spaces to bedrooms and hallways, each setup was designed to reflect everyday use while keeping the product clearly defined within the frame.

Approach

The direction of the shoot focused on balancing lifestyle with clarity—something that sits at the core of effective still life photography. Each scene was built to feel natural without becoming overly styled. The product remained the focal point, supported by the environment rather than lost within it. Careful consideration was given to composition, spacing, and background elements. Subtle adjustments helped maintain a clean, refined look across all images, ensuring they worked both as standalone shots and as part of a wider set.

Lighting on Location

Lighting is always a key part of product photography and shooting on location introduces additional challenges. Each room within the house had different natural light conditions, colours, and spatial limitations. Rather than forcing a single setup across all spaces, the lighting was adapted for each environment while maintaining a consistent overall feel. In most cases I used flash carefully to provide a natural look. matching with some ambient light added warm where needed. And in a few cased high speed flash was needed to capture the details

Overall the lighting required a flexible approach—shaping light to suit each room while keeping continuity in contrast, tone, and direction. Managing reflections and surfaces was also important, particularly across more detailed product finishes.

Planning and Production

Projects like this rely heavily on planning. With multiple setups spread across several days, having a clear structure in place made a significant difference. Each scene was mapped out in advance, allowing the team to move efficiently between locations within the house. A strong production team was essential. Working with experienced producers, stylists, and models ensured that each setup came together smoothly, even when transitioning between very different environments. Process

Shooting lifestyle product photography on location is a balance between control and adaptability. While the overall direction is defined early on, the process involves constant refinement. Small changes in composition, light, and styling were made throughout the shoot to improve each frame. The ability to adapt quickly—while maintaining a consistent visual style—is what keeps the work cohesive across a large number of images.

Outcome

The final images bring together elements of both still life photography and product lifestyle imagery.

Each photograph sits within a consistent visual language, while the variation in environments adds depth and interest to the overall set. Using a single location house helped unify the project, making the series feel connected from start to finish.

Final Thoughts

Location shoots are an important part of being a modern product photographer, particularly when brands want imagery that feels more grounded and real.

While studio work offers complete control, shooting on location introduces a different way of working—one that relies on planning, flexibility, and a strong understanding of light.

With the right approach, it’s a highly effective way to create a diverse yet cohesive set of images.

More to come soon on the new studio and upcoming still life photography projects in London.
