Margo jewellery on model

Shooting jewellery can sometimes combine both still life and fashion elements as part of a single campaign. Shoots like these require superb production and organisation skills. Above all, pre-planning is essential - the types and numbers of shots required, studio and prep space requirements, hair/makeup artists, stylists, props - the list isn’t endless, but there are loads to be considered and addressed by both the photographer and client before the shoot to help make production run smoothly.

Someone once wrote about ‘best laid plans’, but if you’re capable of thinking on your feet, and are creatively flexible in your technical abilities, you’ll still manage to realise expectations and give your clients results they’ll be delighted with.

Enter: Margo, exciting new British jewellery brand

Shot in a fantastically sourced location house in central London and produced as a team of photographer, stylist, hair/makeup artist, models and art director. Our original plan was to convey and evoke 60’s luxe, and from the picture on the left, this works really well. A slight change in art direction, however, and by the end of the shoot, the preferred look swayed towards neutral, so we amended the backgrounds accordingly.

Model Jewellery Photography

Celebrating female strength and individuality is the core ethos of UK-based jewellery creators, Rock&Raw.  They were featured in a previous blog, when I highlighted some creative still life shots, however, this second instalment showcases some great model shots along with uniquely mirrored product imagery.  We worked really hard but had great fun and in the end were able to encapsulate the ethereal essence of such a strong brand: strength in beauty.

The styling objective was to capture the brand's identity, so spotlights feminine strength with the obvious connection with the raw crystals and their spiritual properties.  Our model looked fantastic;  posing with raw cut crystals in the collection of three above, as well as artistic compositions which complement a product shot, like in the example below.

"Rock & Raw creates crystal-charged fine jewellery designed to raise your vibration and connect you to divine feminine energy. Our creations are inspired by the warrior-like strength, the rock, that’s in all of us, along with the raw spirit that we carry within too"

We had a blast working on this shoot which started with a blessing with sage and palo santo.  By the end we were knackered, but very relaxed, as you can see from the behind-the-scenes shot on the left!

Additional lifestyle shots with the jewellery positioned on a whole citrine crystal on the right, positioned on hands above and below the still life shot is created with the spiritual cleansing smoke created from a sage smudge stick.

The crystal pendents are surrounded by carefully positioned raw rock crystals including clear quartz, citrine, amethyst and topaz. Strong directional light creates bold shadows and depth to the colourful jewellery collection.

"Our pieces enshrine the individual powers of crystals and we weave ritual and ceremony into everything we do. All our pieces are created with the intention of bringing healing and transformation and our work is guided by heart-centred meditation."

Fashion accessories, still life and jewellery

Print media demands the highest quality imagery in a large resolution format which retains detail and rendition somehow lost on the average computer screen. So, of course, I was thrilled to see my work feature in two recent publications, printed on high density magazine paper. Both publications for luxury brands Waldorf Astoria and Conrad feature still life compositions of fashion products, jewellery and accessories.
